Why Alberta’s Climate is Uniquely Demanding
Edmonton experiences temperature swings that few cities in the world match. We can see +30°C in July and -40°C wind chill in January — sometimes within the same week in autumn. This thermal cycling causes materials to expand and contract repeatedly, and it’s the primary reason why cheap siding fails prematurely in our climate.
Vinyl Siding: The Clear Winner for Alberta
High-quality vinyl siding is the most popular choice in Edmonton for good reason. Modern vinyl products are engineered with UV stabilizers and impact modifiers that maintain flexibility even at extreme cold. Unlike wood, vinyl doesn’t rot, warp, or require painting. Unlike aluminum, it doesn’t dent easily and provides better insulation.
The key word is high-quality. Cheap vinyl becomes brittle in cold weather and can crack when impacted — even by a door swinging against the wall. We specify products with a minimum thickness of 0.044 inches and certifications for use in cold climates.
What to Look For: Key Specifications
- Thickness: 0.044″ minimum — 0.046″ or heavier for northern Alberta
- Impact rating: Look for Class 4 hail resistance ratings
- Cold temperature rating: Should maintain flexibility to -40°C
- UV stabilizers: Essential for colour retention in Edmonton’s sunny summers
- Wind resistance: Minimum 110 mph rating for our prairie exposure
Engineered Wood and Fibre Cement: Are They Worth It?
Both engineered wood (like LP SmartSide) and fibre cement (like James Hardie) perform well in Alberta when properly installed and maintained. They offer a more wood-like aesthetic and excellent durability. The tradeoffs: higher cost, heavier weight requiring more substantial fastening, and fibre cement requires painting every 10-15 years. They’re excellent choices for homeowners prioritizing appearance over long-term maintenance minimization.
Installation Matters as Much as Material
Even the best siding fails if installed incorrectly. In Alberta, proper installation means: adequate expansion gaps at all terminations (vinyl needs room to move!), appropriate nailing patterns that allow thermal movement, and correct flashing at all penetrations. We’ve repaired many projects where good materials failed simply because the installer didn’t account for our extreme temperature swings.
